Trevor NIcks

I grew up on a farm in rural Missouri and attended William Jewell College in Kansas City where I earned a B.A. in Biochemistry (graduating with honors), Applied Critical Thought & Inquiry, and a minor in Business Administration. In 2016, I co-founded a Spira, a microalgae company, and participated in the IndieBio EU biotech accelerator program in Cork, Ireland. I’m currently a Ph.D. Candidate at Tufts University where I do research in the fields of cell-free biology and directed evolution.

Megan Gruenberg

I am a PhD student at Michigan State University where I work under Dr. Michaela TerAvest. I earned my master’s degree in April of 2020 under the supervision of Dr. Karen Draths, also at Michigan State University. My interest is heavily focused on green chemistry and this led me to discover the power of synthetic biology. Outside of my academic work I also enjoy cooking, painting, and playing the piano.

George Lu

George Lu obtained his undergraduate degree at the University of Alberta in Canada, before moving to the UC San Diego for his Ph.D. study on protein structural biology. He then became a postdoctoral fellow in the lab of Mikhail Shapiro at Caltech, where he focused on the engineering of gas-filled protein nanostructures for biological imaging and cellular control. Dr. Lu was previously awarded the Young Investigator of the Year from the World Molecular Imaging Society for his work on the development of acoustically erasable MRI reporter genes. The independent lab was newly established in the Bioengineering Department at Rice University in 2020 with the support of the NIH Pathway-to-independence (K99/R00) and the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) Scholar awards.

Allison Bakovic

Currently, I am a PhD candidate at George Mason University studying Biosciences with an emphasis on molecular virology and infectious diseases. I offer knowledge in viral replication mechanisms and experience in Biosafety-Level 3 with Select Agents, including coronavirus and alphaviruses. With my added B.S. in BioMolecular Engineering, I can provide systematic provide problem-solving approaches capable of bridging the gap in bioengineering and applied virology.
