Bolt has potential projects available in new host development, strain engineering, and new materials purification and characterization. For new host development, a typical project involves “domesticating” a new host organism, including developing and validating basic physical and genetic manipulation protocols; hosts may be gram negative, gram positive, yeast, or filamentous fungi. For strain engineering, a typical project includes developing and validating a novel cell-sorter based high-throughput screening modality, and deploying that screen to identify mutant strains with improved characteristics. New materials characterization entails working with the team to develop a novel protein purification process, characterizing the protein as a monomer, and then performing small-scale processing of the protein into an interesting material for further characterization.
