Biofoundry Data Interoperability Requires Community Action
Publication Date: October 2026 | Originally published in ACS Synthetic Biology.
Biofoundries generate large experimental datasets that could accelerate AI-driven discovery, but incompatible data formats and no shared schema prevent researchers from combining data across facilities. This Viewpoint proposes three sequential steps: a Global Biofoundry Alliance working group to set minimum data standards, a pilot through the NSF Global Center for Biofoundry Applications to test and refine them, and formalization through standards bodies such as ISO.
